The
National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) yesterday suggested Nigerians to
organize for attainable drought everywhere the country.
The director, Administration of NEMA,Musa Illalah represented by Amina Ahman, highlighted
the implication of the NIMET alert was as a result of foreseeable excessive
downpour of rain thus, states within the North needed to anticipate drought.
NEMA’s
warning followed the prediction of serious downfall of rain by the Nigerian Meteorological
Agency (NIMET). The coordinator of NEMA North West, Mr. Musa Illalah, gave the recommendation in Kaduna via a workshop on liquid and solid waste management within
the context of flood mitigation.
He
suggested residents to prevent developing homes on water ways that and to
continuously maintain their drains to avert flooding.
He
said:
“The implication is that
there might be water surplus and increase in stream flow which will affect dam’s
storage for municipal water supply, may affect hydro power generation and
irrigation.
“Therefore, the development
and regular maintenance of dams for dry season irrigation and water supply must
be accorded high priority during this time.
“In the same vein, there
may be shortage of rainfall; we must also be prepared for drought and the
mitigation of its impact.’’
He outlined that the workshop was to articulate the matter of solid waste management
that exacerbates negative impact of flooding within the country.
The
organizer urged the participants to develop effective and economical management
model through collaboration with all stakeholders so as to handle the matter.
