Monday night witnessed a mild drama in Abeokuta as scores of
commercial sex workers held a candlelight procession to honour their dead
colleagues who were reportedly killed by alleged ritualists over the weekend.
Vanguard reported that the secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ),
Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta was stormed by the mourners who were dressed in black
outfits amidst tears and wailing as they mourned their late colleagues.
Sitira, one of the sex workers was found dead on Sunday morning
at a refuse dump site at Olomoore junction in Abeokuta. Sources say suspected
ritualists abandoned the lifeless body of the 23-year-old prostitute after
chopping off some flesh from her body.
A SUV, was said to have thrown off the remains of Sitira on
the move while driving along Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway.
Speaking with reporters, the protesters while speaking to news
men said Sitira is not the only victim as another of their colleague was also
killed by suspected ritualists.
They said the dismembered remains of the other sex worker was
seen in a ditch at Olomoore, Abeokuta.
In the course of the procession, about 50 commercial sex
workers, who operate their trade in Abeokuta, assembled at the NUJ secretariat
and later moved to the residence of Chief Ernest Shonekan, former
Head of Interim National Government.
The NUJ secretariat was
briefly barred by the sex workers after which their protests and mourning was
moved to the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta.
