Internet service providers and telecom operators were on
Monday given the directive by the Indian government in New Delhi to block access
to 857 pornographic websites.
This directive was issued after the Supreme Court in July
showed concern, over the Home Ministry’s failure to block websites that
featured child pornography.
Vanguard reported that a source who spoke on the condition of
anonymity said that the original petition, which led to the Supreme Court
response in June argued that the increase in the crimes against women and
children were caused by the rapid increase of pornography sites.
While stressing that the move was not a ban since several of
such websites were still available. In his words, he stated that “This is an interim measure as the
government contemplates building up a regulatory framework, which could include
various measures, including mass awareness.”
A bereaved user who sees the move as a harsh one by the Hindu
Nationalist Government said, “Watching
porn is legal in India, although distribution and sale of pornographic material
is illegal.”
Statistics gathered from Pornhub, one of the world’s largest
porn content providers has it that Indians are among the most “prolific
consumers” of internet porn.
Ram Gopal Varma, an Indian filmmaker in his opinion said any
government that embraces a ban on pornography would lose the next election.
