Mr.
Ayuba Wabba, the President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), in Abuja on Thursday
as requested for the review of the N18, 000 minimum wage by the Federal
Government.
Mr.
Ayuba at the National council (NEC) meeting of the union said that the union
was in support of the government’s anti-corruption crusade being a part of the
initiatives to positioning Nigeria’s economy.
“The current minimum wage is unrealistic with
the present economic reality,” he said
He
disclosed that the NLC agreed on the N18, 000 minimum wage with the FG when the
rate of $1 to Naira was N140, but now it's N220 to same.”
Nigerian
employees ought to be treated fairly by reviewing their earnings upward in line
with the current economic reality, adding that the salary was now not enough to
sustain employees.
He
condemned the level of corruption within the country, as privileged few cart
the resources meant for all Nigerians, adding that the NLC would support
President Buhari on his move to prosecute culprits.
“The
issue of corruption in Nigeria is mindboggling and unacceptable to us as this
has caused many of us to be living in penury.
“Those
responsible for corruption and stealing of our collective patrimony should be
prosecuted and face the law if found wanting, this is the only way to make
Nigeria work,” he said.
He
highlighted that those lots of resources that ought to accrue to the state were
being purloined by people and a privileged few.
