President
Muhmmadu Buhari on Friday stated that Nigeria is to revive the production of
weapons for its soldiers locally, in a bid to stop the country's dependence on
importation of arms.
President
Buhari said this during a speech at the National Defence College in Abuja on Friday;
“The Ministry of Defence is being tasked to draw up clear and measurable
outlines for development of a modest military industrial complex for
Nigeria,".
Garba
Shehu, added that defence chiefs had been asked to "re-engineer"
DICON. The division's manufacturing plant within the northern town of Kaduna
currently in the main production of rifles and civilian tools.
The
president said he wants a repositioning of the Defence Industries Corporation
of Nigeria (DICON), which is the military division responsible for weapons
production that was set up in 1964 but has fallen into ruins.
President
Buhari added that "We must evolve viable mechanisms for near self-sufficiency
in military equipment and logistics production complemented only by very advanced
foreign technologies".
