A
man was shot by a New York City police officer on Wednesday morning in Midtown
Manhattan.
Police
investigators said they believed the man might be the person they were trying
to identify as a suspect in a series of hammer attacks around Union Square this
week.
A
police spokesman could not immediately confirm a connection between the man
shot on Wednesday and the hammer attacks earlier in the week.
A
witness, Anthony O’Grady, 26, said he saw the man running downtown in the
middle of Eighth Avenue at 37th Street. An officer stepped off the curb and was
behind him and fired three shots, he said.
“He
looked like he was trying to get away from the officers,” Mr. O’Grady said.
