The Address Downtown Dubai hotel was gutted by fire this evening. At least 16 people were reported injured by officials after a huge blaze broke out from the 20th floor of the hotel. The incident occurred few hours before New Year’s Eve fireworks was supposed to kick off at the nearby Burj Khalifa which is the world's tallest skyscraper, the Burj Khalifa, where crowds assembled to watch the fireworks display.
Up to two million people were expected in central Dubai for the festivities. People have been asked to leave the area around the Address Hotel, which has been evacuated.
An eye witness disclosed that it went from just a small fire at the foot of the building, shot up to the middle and the top of the building in five minutes.
The Dubai government in Arabic tweet said that the fire had started on the 20th floor and has now mostly been put out.
