The
US is proposing that the United Nation Security Council authorize arms embargo
on South Sudan because its leader stunned rebels and observers by refusing to
sign a peace deal.
The
US circulated a draft resolution to council members evening of Wednesday, and
diplomats aforesaid they expected a vote terribly before long.
Earlier
on the same day, South Sudan's President Salva Kiir told US Secretary of State
John Kerry that he would sign a peace deal to finish the 20-month-old conflict,
a state department representative stated.
"President
Kiir assured the secretary that he has every intention of signing the peace
agreement," spokesman John Kirby told reporters after Kerry called Kiir.
"He
said he needed a couple of more days of consultations but he made it very clear
it was his intention to sign, which is encouraging."
Kirby's
comments come two days after Kiir said he needed more time to consider the deal
proposed by regional leaders.
